MASA KEMUNDURAN DAN MASA HUKUM KANONIK DALAM GEREJA KATOLIK REFORMASI

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dinamika masa kemunduran dan reformasi hukum kanonik dalam Gereja Katolik serta mengidentifikasi faktor penyebab dan implikasinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan historis–deskriptif melalui studi kepustakaan terhadap sumber-sumber teologis, historis, dan yuridis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hukum kanonik mengalami perkembangan signifikan pada abad pertengahan melalui metode dialektik dan integrasinya dengan hukum Romawi. Namun, memasuki akhir Abad Pertengahan, hukum kanonik mengalami kemunduran akibat skisma gereja, intervensi kekuasaan politik, serta melemahnya institusi akademik gerejawi. Pada masa Reformasi, kritik Martin Luther dengan prinsip Sola Scriptura mengguncang legitimasi hukum kanonik dan mendorong pergeseran otoritas hukum ke tangan negara. Penelitian ini relevan dalam memberikan pemahaman historis dan teologis mengenai posisi hukum kanonik serta pentingnya pembaruan agar tetap kontekstual dalam kehidupan Gereja modern.
This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the decline and reform of canon law within the Catholic Church and to identify their causes and implications. The research employs a qualitative method with a historical–descriptive approach through library research based on theological, historical, and juridical sources. The findings indicate that canon law experienced significant development in the Middle Ages through the application of the dialectical method and its integration with Roman law. However, toward the late Middle Ages, canon law declined due to church schisms, political intervention, and the weakening of ecclesiastical academic institutions. During the Reformation, Martin Luther’s critique through the principle of Sola Scriptura challenged the legitimacy of canon law and shifted legal authority toward the state. This study is relevant in providing historical and theological insights into the position of canon law and highlighting the need for its renewal to remain contextual in the life of the modern Church.
