This study aims to analyze the relevance of the Heckscher-Ohlin (H-O) theory and the factor endowment concept in explaining Indonesia's export-import patterns in the era of modern trade. The research is motivated by Indonesia's persistently growing trade surplus since 2020, which nonetheless remains heavily reliant on natural resource-based commodities such as palm oil and nickel, amid the dynamics of downstream industrialization policy, global value chains, and geopolitical-economic pressures. This study employs a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach based on a literature review and secondary data analysis for the period 2020–2025, sourced from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Ministry of Trade, and related scholarly publications, using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) indicator as an analytical tool for commodity competitiveness. The findings indicate that Indonesia's export-import structure generally remains consistent with the H-O proposition, with exports dominated by abundant natural resource-based commodities while imports are dominated by capital goods and high-technology products. However, downstream industrialization policies, integration into global value chains, and geopolitical factors have shaped trade patterns that cannot be fully explained by the static assumptions of the classical H-O theory. This study concludes that H-O theory remains relevant as a foundational framework but requires complementary perspectives from modern trade theory to fully capture the complexity of Indonesia's trade. These findings are expected to inform policy formulation on export diversification and the strengthening of national product value-added.
