The process of language acquisition and development in children is one of the most complex phenomena that occupies a central position in linguistic and cognitive psychology studies. Theoretical debates often bring together nativists, who emphasize innate biological intelligence, and behaviorists. This article aims to examine children's language development through the perspective of Functional Linguistics, with a specific focus on the ideas of developmental psychologist Jerome Bruner. The method employed in this article is library research using a descriptive-qualitative approach through the analysis of 12 primary sources discussing child language development, Functional Linguistics, and Jerome Bruner’s theoretical framework. The findings indicate that children's language development does not occur in a biological vacuum; rather, it grows organically through communicative functions mediated by the social environment. Bruner bridges the limitations of formal-structural theories by introducing the concept of the Language Acquisition Support System (LASS) as a complementary partner to Chomsky's Language Acquisition Device (LAD). Through LASS, adults surrounding the child provide structured stimuli in the form of scaffolding and Child-Directed Speech (CDS) within everyday interactions. Furthermore, the process of language mastery is aligned with children's cognitive reconstruction, progressing from the enactive stage to the iconic stage and ultimately reaching the symbolic stage. The implications of this study emphasize that pragmatic aspects and the fulfillment of communicative functions precede the mastery of formal grammatical structures in children, while also highlighting the importance of social environmental support in fostering language development.
