Expert testimony is one of the legally recognized types of evidence in the Indonesian criminal justice system, as stipulated in Article 186 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP). In the context of corruption crimes, expert testimony plays a vital role as scientific evidence to fill technical gaps that law enforcement officers may not be able to explain. However, in practice, experts who provide testimony in court often face intimidation, discrimination, and even criminalization. This phenomenon raises concerns about threats to academic independence and public participation, particularly in cases with significant political or economic interests, such as corruption cases in the tin mining sector. One such threat is the Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP), which refers to legal actions intended to silence or intimidate public participation, including the involvement of experts in judicial processes. To address this issue, Indonesia has recognized Anti-SLAPP provisions, particularly in the Environmental Protection and Management Law (PPLH), although their implementation remains suboptimal. This study aims to analyze the legal protections available for experts in corruption crime trials and examine the impacts of criminalization on their role and position in the evidentiary process. Using a normative and case study approach, this research finds that despite the existence of legal instruments supporting protection, in practice, expert protection remains weak. Therefore, it is crucial to strengthen legal mechanisms and provide effective safeguards to prevent attempts to silence experts and to uphold the integrity of the criminal justice process, especially in corruption cases.
